This essay aims to explore the subject of the democratization of knowledge in the field of International Relations, especially in the context of interaction between diplomats and scholars, from the institutional perspective of the Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG). Established by law in 1971, FUNAG has the institutional mission of promoting cultural and educational activities in the areas of international relations and Brazilian diplomatic history; promoting the Brazilian foreign policy and contributing for a better public understanding of international issues. In the current, constant changing international setti ng, knowledge about external realities is paramount, in order to be aware of the factors which impact the everyday life of peoples. Knowledge and information are not enough, for we must be imbued with critical discernment and willing to act in the defense of values and ideals which grant us identity as a nation. Therefore, one must not only understand the dynamics of international relations, but also be able to influence the evolution of the external realm in order to promote and to protect rights and interests.
