The future points to a scenario of conflicts arising from the scarcity of water worldwide. The countries that neglect their water resources, which are extremely important in maintaining, supporting and conserving life in the biosphere, would be punished with heavy fines and perhaps become camps of war. However, the indifference of the governmental sectors regarding the use and conservation of groundwater taken from wells, which is regulated in the Brazilian legislation, is evident. The inhabitants of the Ilha de Maré, part of the city of Salvador-BA, survived several centuries using wells and shallow springs of the island. Therefore, these wells and springs were frequently cleaned , but, with the introduction of treated water and population growth, many wells were filled up to enable construction of houses and many wells and springs are now abandoned and polluted. This study involved the mapping of shallow springs and wells in the communities of Praia Grande, Santana and Botelho; and the study of sociocultural aspects of water usage, based on interviews; and the water quality analyzes, based on physico-chemical and microbiological analyzes. One hopes these results will provide guidelines for further researches and for activities in environmental education and shared management of water resources of the island.
