Abstract

This article presents a brief analysis of the work O Pêndulo de Euclides, by the Bahian professor and writer Aleilton Fonseca, looking at the political aspects that run through the author's writing. These aspects concern the text, classified as a historical novel, which has a strong potential for testimony, capable of producing/revealing images that are still barely visible of the event that became known as the Canudos War. In this sense, we want to highlight the perspective of a writer who comes from the backlands, given that the history of Canudos had as its main witness the accounts and descriptions presented in the canonical work “Os Sertões”, by Euclides da Cunha, a work to which Fonseca shows himself to be both an ally and a critic. For these developments, the approaches of the German author Georges Didi-Huberman, in his work Images in spite of everything, as well as the conceptions of memory presented by the philosopher Jeanne Marie Gagnebin (2009) and the Nietzschean perspectives on “truth” (2001) are of total importance.
